Malnutrition literally means “bad nutrition” and technically includes both over and under nutrition. Malnutrition also means a state in which the physical function of an individual is impaired to the point where he or she can no longer maintain adequate bodily performance process such as growth, lactation, physical work and resisting and recovering from diseases.

The effects of malnutrition on individual can lead to poverty though the latter is also another cause of malnutrition; That said, sweet potatoes are grown as a food crop in most of developing countries like Rwanda and plays a primary role in food security especially in rural areas for both home consumption and to supplement household income by sale. According to a study conducted by the Rwandan Ministry of agriculture (Minagri) and the World Food Program(WFP) in the middle of 2016, the rates of chronic malnutrition in Rwanda had fallen significantly in the last 3 year, though it also showed that the rate was still stubbornly high in some rural areas of Rwanda comparing to the urban areas.
The comprehensive food security and vulnerability analysis(CFSVA) which is conducted every 3 years has shown That stunting among children aged under 5 dropped to 36.7 percent in 2015, down from 43 percent at the time of the last analysis in 2012. Stunting, where a child is short for their age, is an indicator of chronic malnutrition and permanently affects brain development and health.
One of the solutions that Rwanda is implementing so far are Kitchen garden and Girinka Program which aims at transforming livelihoods which includes fighting malnutrition in vulnerable families with malnutrition problems. It is very clear that Rwanda is making impressive progress in its fight against food insecurity and undernutrition.
